The Honolulu Chorale’s Spring Concert

presents

GABRIELI TO GERSHWIN
Four Centuries of Great Music

The Honolulu Chorale will celebrate 43 years of music-making with “Gabrieli to Gershwin”, a special concert for Spring, at the Pearl City Cultural Center at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 31st. Four centuries of great music will include sacred works by Gabrieli, Palestrina and Bach, a selection of opera arias and choruses, and music for the season from Haydn’s “The Seasons” and Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” – as well as some of our traditional barbershop and madrigal specials.

Maestro Joseph McAlister, in his 15th year as Music Director, will conduct the 36 singers of this leading community chorus and an instrumental ensemble featuring resident accompanist Sangeet Gelhorn and the Majik String Quartet. Introductions to the music will be made by Ian Capps, creator and host of “The Early Muse”, Hawai’i Public Radio’s weekly program on music before 1700.

Founded in 1966, The Honolulu Chorale, a non-profit organization, is one of the oldest community choruses in the State of Hawai’i. The members of the Chorale represent the multi-ethnicity of the state’s population, all walks of life, and ages ranging from teens to octogenarians. They sing a wide variety of musical styles, from classical to folk, Broadway and Hawaiian music under the leadership of Joseph McAlister.  The Chorale presents two major concerts each year, in addition to performing at care homes and retirement homes. In March it sponsors an annual Community Chorus Festival at which a variety of Hawaii’s ethnic choral groups perform.
